Building Services Engineering Commissioning is the process of ensuring that all mechanical and electrical systems in a building are designed, installed, tested, and operating according to the required standards and the client’s expectations.
It takes place toward the final stages of construction, but it also involves planning from the design phase. The goal is to make sure that systems such as HVAC, electrical distribution, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection all function correctly, efficiently, and safely before the building is handed over for use.
Commissioning engineers and specialists carry out inspections, testing, and performance verification. This includes checking that equipment is installed properly, systems are balanced and calibrated, controls are working as intended, and different systems interact correctly with each other. For example, they ensure that heating and cooling systems respond accurately to temperature controls, or that emergency systems activate properly under fault conditions.
A key part of commissioning is documentation and demonstration. Engineers record test results, provide operation manuals, and often train building operators so they can manage the systems effectively after handover.
Today, commissioning also places strong emphasis on energy performance and sustainability, ensuring that buildings operate efficiently and meet environmental targets from day one.
