Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Building Services Engineering (often called building services or MEP engineering) is a branch of engineering focused on designing, installing, and maintaining the systems that make buildings safe, comfortable, and functional for occupants.
At its core, it deals with the “invisible” infrastructure inside a building. This includes heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that regulate temperature and air quality; plumbing systems that supply clean water and remove waste; fire protection systems like sprinklers; and sometimes aspects of energy systems such as boilers, chillers, and renewable energy integration.
Mechanical building services engineers are responsible for ensuring these systems work efficiently, sustainably, and in compliance with regulations. They calculate heating and cooling loads, design ductwork and piping layouts, select equipment, and coordinate with architects and other engineers so that everything fits within the building’s structure and design.
A key part of the role today is energy efficiency and environmental performance. Engineers aim to reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and create healthier indoor environments, often using smart controls and modern technologies.
